A luxury yacht was struck by an unexpectedly violent storm off Sicily early on Monday, killing one person and leaving six persons missing, including American technology investor Mike Lynch and his child.
The British-flagged” Bayesian”, a 56-metre-long ( 184-ft ) sailboat, was carrying 22 people and was anchored just off shore near the port of Porticello when it was hit by ferocious weather, the Italian coast guard said in a statement.
According to witnesses, the yacht rapidly vanished beneath the waves just before dawn. Fifteen persons escaped before it went down, including Lynch’s family, Angela Bacares, who owned the ship, and a one-year-old woman.
The names of the deceased and missing were no quickly released, but a person familiar with the evacuation procedure confirmed that Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter, Hannah, were not accounted for.
According to Salvatore Cocina, mind of Sicilian legal protection, Jonathan Bloomer, president of Morgan Stanley International, and Chris Morvillo, a Clifford Chance attorney, were also among the missing.
According to Roman media, the ship’s crew restaurant is the dead guy.
After receiving a telephone and email asking for post, Morgan Stanley did not respond right away. A request for comment was never returned by Clifton Chance.
The Italian coastline watch said the missing had European, American and Canadian countries. Individuals claimed that Lynch planned the trip for his coworkers.
” The weather was pretty strong. Terrible weather was expected, but not of this magnitude”, a beach watch established in the Italian capital Palermo told Reuters.
The commander of a local boat claimed to have turned on the engine to power his ship and prevent motion with the Bayesian, which had been anchored next to him when the winds were blowing.
After the surprise was over, we discovered that the ship behind us was gone, Karsten Borner told editors.” We managed to keep the ship in place. The other ship “went level on the water, and subsequently down”, he added.
He claimed that his team therefore discovered some of the individuals on a career ship, including a baby girl and her family, and loaded them onto the ship before the seacoast guard arrived to retrieve them.
Lynch, aged 59, is one of Britain’s best-known software companies. He built the country’s largest technology company, Autonomy, from his ground-breaking studies at Cambridge University, and became known as Britain’s Bill Gates.
Before the deal spectacularly unravelled following the acquisition, with the US tech giant accusing him of fraud, he sold the business to HP for$ 11 billion in 2011.
When lauded by scientists, researchers and officials, Lynch spent much of the past decade in judge defending his name. After spending more than a year living comfortably under house arrest, he was found innocent by a judge in San Francisco in June.
He claimed at the time that he was “elated” to be cleared in the legal trial where he pleaded not guilty to any wrongdoing and claimed HP had hampered the inclusion of the two businesses.
Fishermen inspect disaster
The catastrophe of the Bayesian, which was lying at a level of 49 meters, was being examined by fishermen, according to the beach watch.
In the nearby village of Termini Imerese, police in an investigation have opened an investigation to determine what had gone wrong.
After days of scorching heat, which had elevated the warmth of the Mediterranean Sea to record levels, storms and heavy rain have swept Italy down in recent days, raising the risk of severe weather, according to experts.

The Bayesian was constructed in 2008 by European shipyard Perini, and it completed its refit in 2020. Its 75-metre tower is the tallest metal tower in the world, Perini said on its site.
The shipspotting.com web said the ship was owned by a company called Revtom Limited. According to business documents, Lynch’s family Bacares is listed as the single investor.
Because Lynch’s PhD essay and the program that helped him succeed were based on Bayesian theory, the yacht’s name may have a positive impact on him.
According to web professional yacht places, the ship can handle up to 12 guests in six suites and a team of 10 and has won a number of design awards.
The boat left the Italian port of Milazzo on August 14 and was past tracked south of Palermo on Sunday night, according to vehicle tracking software Vesselfinder, with a routing status of “at anchor.”
