Colleges may grow” weather knowledge” strategies in order to save the world, a think tank argues.
This month, the Aspen Institute’s new” Higher Ed Climate Action Plan” was released as part of its effort Planet Ed, which aims to address climate change in training.
” People and communities across our country and the world are being harmed by the effects of climate change,” said one official. These results will simply increase in the years to come”, the” Higher Ed Climate Action Plan “states.
” In this motion program, we identify the option for the higher education sector to improve climate solutions, adapt to our changing climate, and prepare students for success in a sustainable, resilient, and simply society”, the program reads.
This is Planet Ed states it hopes for” America’s 4, 000 institutions of higher knowledge” to “engage, plan, and assist the 19 million students enrolled in colleges and universities for victory in a changing environment and business”.
It goes on to suggest that universities apply” a plan for equal climate action”,” support all students to ensure success in a changing climate”, “engage and support communities…in advancing important solutions”, “develop solutions to reduce carbon pollution”, and “model solutions to spur large, equal climate action”.
Some universities have already begun implementing” climate education” into their curricula. Schools like Arizona State University and the University of California, San Diego, will require students to take climate change courses beginning this academic year. Meanwhile, Columbia, Harvard, and Stanford have new schools focused exclusively on educating about climate change, according to Climate Telegram.
Other institutions have established specific positions to advance” climate education.” According to a report from The College Fix, the University of Pennsylvania has created a vice provost position to” support Penn’s leadership in addressing the climate crisis.”
According to Inside Higher Ed, sustainability officers at the State University of New York system are tasked with” the development of a systemwide climate action and sustainability plan that integrates workforce development, research, and academic programming.”
Western Michigan University adopted a different strategy by launching an “emergency” climate change campaign to inspire students to take action during the” crisis.” As previously reported by The College Fix, the school held workshops and seminars titled” Using Mindfulness to Ease Climate Anxiety” and” Indigenous Approaches to Climate Action in Relationship to Mother Earth.”
