I shared the story of the University of Texas closing its Della business with you back in April. Following the passing of a law that the country’s government required colleges to shut down diversification departments, that decision was made.

Another Southern school is doing the same thing this week, but Kentucky University is putting the brakes on its La office in anticipation of what the Bluegrass State legislature might do next. Because the university is reorganizing the office and moving it to another department to address various initiatives, the move wo n’t lead to job losses.
” The actions on the Lexington, Kentucky, school comes after state lawmakers debated whether to reduce diversity, equity, and inclusion methods at public institutions”, reports the Associated Press. Democratic supermajorities in the Kentucky House and Senate were unable to work out a solution before the end of the session in April, but it is anticipated that the matter will emerge when lawmakers reconvene earlier in the year.
Eli Capilouto, president of the university, made the announcement in an email sent to all campuses. He claimed that shifting the La department to another interests preserves educational flexibility while maintaining a” sense of belonging” for faculty and students.
” But we’ve also listened to politicians and heard some of their queries about whether we appear political or political on contemporary issues, and we barely interpret things only through the lens of identity,” Capilouto wrote. The issue with this is that we intentionally or unintentionally reduce discussion. I hear many of those problems reflected in debate with some of our students, university, and employees across our campus”.

Capilouto stated that the university wo n’t mandate centralized diversity training at the college or unit level when describing the restructuring at the UK, according to the AP. ” It wo n’t place required diversity statements in hiring and application processes, he said, and websites will be free of political positions to ensure impartiality”.

However, nearly 800 yards away, the University of Nebraska is also doing ahead with its La practices. Rodney Bennett, the university’s Chancellor, made the announcement in a text. There’s another bend to Bennett’s selection, he’s the first dark person to hold the office of president at the University of Nebraska.
” I fully grasp the weight of this decision and its relevance, but a unified approach to this job is no longer appropriate for our establishment”, Bennett wrote. He claimed that the university would change its focus from different departments to” supporting and creating a sense of community and belonging.”
Each of us has the responsibility to create a loving environment for all members of our community, he wrote.
Bennett served as president last year, and his forerunner, last year, criticized the condition legislature’s plans to pass legislation to ban college DEI departments. The congressional efforts failed.

We’ve seen businesses quitting DEI, and institutions are beginning to do the same. Hopefully, it wo n’t take long for DEI to become a relic of the past.
