According to French media reports, Pascal Durov, the powerful creator and CEO of the well-known messaging app Telegram, was detained on Saturday evening at Bourget aircraft, which is located on the outskirts of Paris.
Durov was detained in France as a result of an outstanding arrest warrant related to an ongoing initial police investigation, according to a report on TF1’s website.
According to both TF1 and BFM, the investigation focused on the lack of content moderators on Telegram, which legislation police believed allowed unchallenged criminal activity to continue on the communication system.
According to TF1, Durov was traveling from Azerbaijan and was arrested at approximately 20: 00 ( 18: 00 GMT ).
Durov, who Forbes estimates to be worth$ 15.5 billion, founded Telegram after leaving Russia in 2014 as a result of his opposition to needs to shut down opposition groups on his VK social media platform, which he later sold.
Despite force from some governments, Durov has maintained that the game, which now boasts 900 million active users, may be a “neutral system” and not become involved in political matters.
