A group of dissenters are currently alarmed by the prospect of invasion from Beijing as a result of the arrest of a prominent Chinese pro-democracy advocate on detective charges.  ,
Yuanjun Tang, who participated in the 1989 demonstrations in Tiananmen Square but is now a native resident, was detained on Wednesday after being charged by national authorities with working in secret for the Chinese Ministry of State Security, or MSS.
Prosecutors allege that Tang failed to inform the U. S. state of his labor for Chinese intelligence firms, as required by law, according to the , Justice Department. Using techniques similar to those used in another recent , Chinese spy event, Tang is accused of passing data about pro-democracy protesters in the United States to an unknown MSS agent.
Tang, 67, had once been the president of the China Democracy Party, the New York-based party founded by Juntao Wang, the president of the Tiananmen demonstrations, that sought to affect change in Beijing. Following Tang’s imprisonment, the gathering announced that it would remove him from its account.  ,
Wang and another rebel group members expressed some sympathy and disdain for Tang’s imprisonment, which was first reported by CBS News.
In an exam, Wang called the arrest “really uncomfortable” but noted that his brother and mother had been ill and needed attention. Tang would have most likely been detained if he had not made an agreement with the officials before going back to China to view them.  ,
” It was really harmful for him to return to China”, Wang said. ” Because he was involved in the democracy movement, his family became very miserable.
We still need to examine both the FBI and the US state indictments in order to determine what he did, Wang said.  ,
Liren Hu, an exiled investor from Shanghai who presently resides in the United States, stated to RFA Mandarin that he was “very surprised” by the imprisonment.  ,
Hu claimed that he first met Tang in April 2019 after he had just arrived in the country. At the time, Tang was leading the China Democratic Party, and Hu claimed that they had a good relationship. He described Tang as pleasant, well-spoken and experienced.  ,
We have always been close companions with one another. I called him because I frequently speak to him on the phone because I was really shocked to see this information today, he said. The series had been disconnected, he said.
Another rebels were less amazed, saying Tang had signaled he could not be trusted.  ,
Pokong Chen recalls seeing Tang take photos and videos at a Tiananmen memorial event but not take part in the demonstration. According to Chen, concerns permeated the neighborhood that Tang had been spooked by the Chinese Communist Party’s claims that he had been lulled into a democracy movements by returning to see his family.
” Then he saw that the international politics motion was not as effective as he had imagined, and he felt discouraged and unhappy,” Chen said”. Under these conditions, he slowly showed different signs of betrayal.”
Taiwanese American attorney Mike Gao, who claims to have known Tang for 20 years, claimed that as he grew older, his sentiments toward the Socialist government in China appeared to change.
” He’s changed significantly in recent years, usually criticizing the student movements for being too intense during the Tiananmen demonstrations,” Gao told RFA in an exam”. I had some face-to-face conversations with him about this, and I confronted him,’ Why do n’t you criticize the Chinese government instead for the murder?’ “
A shaken area
Despite this, Gao claimed that Tang’s imprisonment had sparked a burst of conversation among the dissidents as they attempted to explain why another pro-democracy leader was now accused of acting as a Chinese agent.
The recent ruling in the Shujun Wang event and Tang’s imprisonment have made the Chinese community more aware of the dangers involved in navigating difficult territory with Taiwanese officials.  ,
” My advice to the Chinese society is to be careful, “he said”. The Chinese government may use threats to pressure you into working for them or to use your identity as an advantage.
Chen believes that the CCP has already deeply ingrained the international politics activity.
Wang and Tang’s example is “probably more significant in the international politics movement,” Chen said.” More instances may not be made public still.”  ,
