The Republican-led Safeguard American Voter Eligibility ( SAVE ) Act, which would require attestation of citizenship to cast ballots, was opposed by all but five Democrats in the previous month. However, Speaker Mike Johnson reportedly gives Democrats another chance to secure our elections by tying the bill to a continuing resolution ( CR ) that would allow the government to continue funding through March.
Republicans introduced the SAVE Act after Democrats allowed thousands of unlawful immigrants into the country. Citizens can now only check a box stating that they are citizens when registering to cast ballots, which is nothing more than the honor system.
Johnson, according to Punchbowl News, is planning on tying the CR to the SAVE Act. Sen. Mike Lee of Utah previously backed tying the two together, telling Fox News in August that the addition of the legislation to the spending bill is” the best way to move that through,” making sure that the estimated 30 million noncitizens in the United States and the 10 million plus illegal immigrants who have arrived in the last three and a half years are n’t voting in this November’s election.
Democrats are now critcizing the reportedly taken action, including Senate Appropriations Committee Chair Patty Murray, who claimed “demanding absurd political poison supplements is a nonstarter” in accordance with Punchbowl News.
Democrats are only really upset that they have to justify their opposition to excluding noncitizens from national elections.
What Is The Protect Act?
The 1993 National Voter Registration Act may be amended to create providing video proof of citizenship a need for voter registration under the Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility Act. Essentially, it is unlawful for noncitizens to register to vote or ballot in federal elections. However, it’s mostly toothless because, under current rules, a participant has merely confirm their citizen by checking a box in violation of perjury.
The SAVE Act serves as the “teeth,” preventing people from being listed on the voter rolls by requiring them to present proof of membership.
But 198 Democrats voted against the costs in July, with five Liberals — Texas Reps. Henry Cuellar and Vicente Gonzalez Jr, North Carolina Rep. Don Davis, Maine Rep. Jared Golden, and Washington Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez — joining Republicans to complete it.
Why Are Democrats Opposed To Safeguarding Elections?
Liberals contend that the bill’s purpose is irrelevant because it already makes it unlawful for noncitizens to vote.
Making a false claim of membership or voting in an election is punished by expulsion from the United States and a permanent club to entrance, according to President Joe Biden earlier this year.
” It is against the rules for noncitizens to register to vote and to vote in national elections”, Rep. Joseph Morelle, D-N. Y., said in earlier opposition to the policy.
Rep. Terri Sewell, D-Ala., echoed a similar attitude, saying:” We know that it is already unlawful for noncitizens to vote in national elections. Noncitizens who attempt to cast ballot in national elections could spend up to five years in jail, as per recent law, and could even face deportation.
But if it’s already prohibited, why did Democrats be upset with laws that only serve to establish a means of enforcement?
Well, only if they do n’t really care if noncitizens decide our elections. Importantly, in Democrat-run cities like San Francisco, specific noncitizens may vote in school board votes. In New York City, leftists fought to help 800, 000 noncitizens to vote in municipal votes, though a jury rejected their problem.
Noncitizens Have Been Illegally Caught On Voter Rolls
If the current laws on the books worked the way Democrats want to pretend they work, then 11, 198 noncitizens would have never ended up on the voter rolls in Pennsylvania, more than 6, 000 would n’t have been found ( and cleared ) from Virginia’s rolls, and 1, 500 foreigners would n’t have been caught registered to vote in California by the state DMV in 2018.
More importantly, the Department of Justice has merely filed 35 legal cases against noncitizens for voting illegally over the course of a 20-year period despite Democrats ‘ conviction that it is prohibited. But a 2016 assessment in North Carolina only found that 41 noncitizens cast a vote while The Brennan Center for Justice found” about 30 occurrences of a possible noncitizen election” in “immigrant-heavy states”, according to The Associated Press.
That means that, as an unnamed X accounts FoiaFan said,” the legislation is not being convincingly enforced”.
Additionally, Americans want their votes to be protected. Almost 65 % of Americans “believe that people may be required to show proof of membership in order to vote in elections,” according to a YouGov poll conducted in 2022. According to YouGov, 83 percent of respondents said they would “be ready to offer proof of their citizenship on little notice.”
They do n’t care about the possibility that foreigners are interfering with American elections through a vote for a party that has spent years feigning outrage over alleged foreign election interference that they believe led to former President Donald Trump winning.
