Improve patrols of all spiritual spaces on campus, according to school officials.
After discovering damaged Catholic images in a school chapel at the exclusive Catholic institution in Washington, D.C., Georgetown University leaders have opened an investigation into “potential love crimes.”
A big ritual cross was “inappropriately moved and sustained injury after being placed against the door,” according to Associate Vice President of Public Safety Jay Gruber and Vice President for Mission &, Ministry Rev. Mark Bosco in an Aug. 30 notice to the school area.
Also, the statue of the Blessed Mother by the Heyden Observatory and Gardens was “displaced and on the terrain”, they wrote, adding:” We are now investigating them as possible love crimes”.
According to the letter, the cause of the person or people involved is unknown, as is whether they belong to a college.
One suspect was spotted in the chapel the night before the revelation, around 11:40 p.m. He is described as” a light-complexioned male wearing a dark-colored hoodie and dark-colored pants”.
However, officials said they do not realize whether he was involved in the theft.
The two school frontrunners expressed deep concern over the destruction of religious symbols in their letters, calling the actions “hurtful and offensive.”
” Acts of vandalism, particularly of sacred places, have no place in our school community”, they stated, adding that in response to the event, the class is “increasing inspections of all religious spots on campus”.
The email also alluded to another new “irregularities” at the same places on campus in the past few days, though no further particulars were provided.
The Catholic Ministry stated in an email to Catholic students that the school is working with the crucifix’s creator to recover it.
Teddy Tibbs, a student and the manager of a Catholic services firm on school, told the college paper, the Hoya, that students are actually hurt by the theft.
In an email to the Hoya, he wrote,” This function has further exacerbated a culture of hostility between Catholics and non-Catholics on campus. It will take some time for our Christian society to cure.”
” I even believe this occurrence has brought many up and highlighted Georgetown’s personality as a Catholic university”, Tibbs wrote.
He added that Catholic individuals and the Catholic Campus Ministry met to discuss ways to improve the health of campus-wide places of worship.
