A chronically sick girl from Missouri, US is preparing to travel to Switzerland for a physician-assisted dying. Hendrix, who has been fighting capillary lung disease and lupus for four years, claims her lung capacity is gradually declining, requiring her to keep in control of her last moments.
” I’ve had a fantastic life, and I want to have some respect when I’m going to the second phase”, Hendrix told 12 KFVS. She plans to make the trip with her daughter, Charlene Foeste, and end her life on September 26.
Hendrix led a demanding lifestyle that included traveling and hiking, but he now struggles to breathe and may depend on an oxygen tank. She explains that she chose to visit Switzerland because she does n’t want to wait until she can no longer travel. ” I do n’t want to get to the point of,’ This is existing, not living,'” she said.
The 79-year-old’s selection has sparked hard discussions within her family. Her daughter, Charlene, admits she does n’t agree with her mother’s choice but feels it’s not her place to interfere. ” It’s not my choice. I do like her and support her”, Foeste said. ” There’s no way on the planet my dad is going to do this alone, no way”.
Hendrix chose Switzerland because of strict US laws, which mandate that people have less than six months to live. However, physician-assisted suicide is lawful in 10 US states and Washington, DC. Hendrix thinks that allowing her to wait until she’s nearing death did rob her of power. ” I do n’t want to wait that long”, she said. ” I do n’t want to get that sick”.
Hendrix has long advocated for supported death. Due to a lack of available meetings, her trip to Switzerland was delayed, but the method later started.
Although some of Hendrix’s friends and family disagree with her determination, she remains determined. ” I really am peaceful about my decision, and it’s the right item for me and my body”, she said, as per Fox News.
