A groundbreaking law was passed by California’s governor, Gavin Newsom, which prohibits particular food dyes from being used in public schools because of their relationship with restlessness and behavioural issues. The law, which may take influence in 2028, will have an impact on food items like Fruit Loops and Flamin’ Hot Cheetos.
Assemblyman Jesse Gabriel, D-Encino, has introduced a bill that would outlaw schools from selling or distributing goods containing synthetic dyes like Red No. 40, Yellow 5, Yellow 6, Blue 1, Blue 2, and Green 3. These colors are linked to restlessness and various behavioral problems in children, particularly those who have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder ( ADHD). Stores will still be able to buy foods containing the banned colors, though.
” Our health is inextricably tied to the food we eat — but fresh, healthy foods are n’t always available or affordable for families”, Newsom said, as quoted by Politico.
” Currently, we are refusing to accept the status quo, and making it possible for all, including school children to access healthy, delicious meals without harmful, and usually addictive compounds”, he added.
The legislation was widely supported by bipartisans, but it faced substantial business opposition. The policy, according to the food industry, was have a negative impact on school sports teams ‘ ability to raise money and create confusion among consumers.
John Hewitt, from the Consumer Brands Association, expressed concerns, saying, as quoted by Politico,” The section of this act had cost schools and families income, limit choice and access, and build consumer confusion”.
Instead of discontinuing their goods, Peeps ‘ studies suggest that businesses have already modified their calculations to comply with the new regulations.
The food industry has opposed dietary rules for the next consecutive year, according to Newsom. He passed a law that forbids various compounds in foods last month.
