Elon Musk’s social media platform X paid $5.2 million in fines after being banned by Brazil’s Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes over accusations of disinformation, but mistakenly transferred these funds into the wrong account.
Justice Moraes confirmed that while the whole amount had been received, it was not deposited in accordance with the court’s guidelines. According to the AFP, he ordered the funds to be immediately directed to the correct account.
Before the expulsion, X had 22 million people in Brazil. After a few weeks of silence, X began to censor some balances under research and requested to have the ban lifted on September 26. But, Moraes determined that the business must pay the outstanding fines first before any possible reinstatement may arise.
After the system violated court orders, including removing numerous right-wing records accused of spreading propaganda and appointing a constitutional representative in Brazil as required by law, Justice Moraes ordered the company to shut down X on August 31.
This situation began during Brazil’s 2022 national election campaign, when Moraes ordered the removal of records associated with the failed far-right former Jair Bolsonaro. Following the election of his communist foe Luiz Inácio Lula de Silva, Bolsonaro supporters attacked federal buildings in Brasilia in January 2023. Tensions grew even more severe.
Musk, who he formerly referred to as “evil despot” and likened Voldemort from the” Harry Potter” line, has recently toned down his remarks about the Judge.
X had 22 million people in Brazil, its largest business in Latin America, before Moraes blocked it. The system had hoped that the penalty payment would bring the dispute to an end, allowing it to continue its services in the nation.
