A recent study based on Microsoft’s Bing AI-powered Copilot demonstrates the need for caution when using the health information resource.
The results, published in Scimex, display that many of the chatbot’s reactions require advanced knowledge to understand fully, and nearly 40 % of its tips issue with scientific consensus. Alarmingly, almost 1 in 4 solutions were deemed probably dangerous, with the risk of causing serious harm or even dying if followed.
Concerns about the 50 most frequently prescribed medications in the US
Researchers posed ten frequently asked questions to Microsoft Copilot using Microsoft Copilot about the 50 most frequently prescribed drugs in the 2020 U.S. inpatient business. These issues covered topics such as the medication ‘ signs, mechanisms of action, usage guidelines, possible adverse reactions, and contraindications.
The education levels needed to understand a particular text was calculated using the Flesch Reading Ease Score. A grade of 0 to 30 indicates that the text must be read in order to be considered quite challenging. Likewise, a score between 91 and 100 means the word is very easy to read and right for 11-year-olds.
The study’s overall average score is 37, which indicates that the majority of the chatbot’s responses are difficult to read total. Even the highest clarity of chatbot answers also required an education level of higher, or extra, school.
Also, authorities determined that:
- 54 % of the chatbot responses aligned with scientific consensus, while 39 % of the responses contradicted scientific consensus.
- 42 % of the actions were deemed to cause mild or moderate damage.
- 36 % of the responses were deemed to be harmless.
- 22 % were considered to lead to severe harm or death.

Artificial use in the health sector
Artificial intelligence has been a part of the healthcare sector for some time, providing a variety of programs to enhance patient results and streamline operations.
In clinical image analysis, AI has a significant role, enabling the interpretation of intricate images more quickly or assisting with the early detection of illnesses. It also aids in the identification of novel drug candidates by analyzing sizable data. Moreover, AI supports health experts by easing loads in hospitals.
At house, AI-powered virtual assistants may enable patients with everyday tasks, such as medicine reminders, visit arranging, and symptom tracking.
The use of search vehicles to get health data, especially about drugs, is common. Nevertheless, the growing inclusion of AI-powered bots in this area remains largely unknown.
A separate investigation by French and German experts, published in the BMJ Quality &, Safety book, examined the use of AI-powered bots for health-related questions. The researchers used Microsoft’s Bing AI copilot to conduct their research, noting that” AI-powered bots are capable of providing general complete and accurate patient medicine information.” However, experts concluded that a significant number of responses were wrong or potentially harmful.

The researchers who conducted the Scimex study did not examine actual calm experiences, and they believed that prompts in different languages or from different nations might have an impact on the quality of the chatbot responses.
Additionally, they added that their research demonstrates how search engines with AI-powered ai can provide precise responses to clients ‘ usually enquired concerns about drug therapies. However, these solutions, often complex, “repeatedly provided potentially damaging information was jeopardise individual and medication security”. They emphasized the importance of people consulting care professionals, as bot answers may not always produce error-free data.
Additionally, it might be a better use of chatbots for health-related information to learn more about the context and proper use of medications prescribed by a healthcare professional.
