Before the U.S. national election on November 5, a caravan of almost 2, 000 workers has made the trek to the United States ‘ southern border from Mexico’s southern border with Guatemala.

The few thousand left on what could be a 1, 000 or 2, 000-mile trip through the state, determined to reach the U. S. in the next two days, according to media and social media accounts.

Prior to the previous November election, new White House governments have never made illegal immigrants who can demonstrate they entered the country a concern for imprisonment and deportation, giving immigrants more motivation to reach quickly.

In the national election, former president Donald Trump will face vice chairman Kamala Harris. Trump has pledged to carry out the largest imprisonment operation in past and has promised a serious assault on illegal immigration.

Harris has no stated how she would govern differently than Joe Biden, who undid some of Trump’s stronger boundary executive commands when he took office in 2021, leading to historically high levels of illegal immigration.

Since June, when Biden took executive action to halt the flow of people at the border, the Department of Homeland Security’s U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency has increased the number of removal flights and expedited removed more illegal immigrants.

Since the Trump administration, hundreds of caravans have made similar journeys from southern Mexico to the United States, and all of them have been disbanded before arriving in the country.

The travel, often by foot or atop trains, is dangerous as criminal organizations in Mexico, known as cartels, will target migrants with violence for not paying them to smuggle them.

Previous caravans have been organized by activists, including Luis García Villagrán and Irineo Mujica. This organization is the third to travel north since earlier this month when Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum took the oath of office.

The caravan, according to Mexican media outlet La Verdad, had been nicknamed” El Nio,”” the boy,”” the Christ child,” and” the meteorological term for a tropical Pacific Ocean surface that is significantly warmer than the ocean’s surface.

A previous caravan of about 1, 000 migrants departed on Oct. 13 and called itself” God Guides Us”, according to La Verdad.

Over the years, Mexico’s stance on immigration has fluctuated and shifted. The government for several years required that migrants present a document allowing them to travel north while staying in the country. Otherwise, they could be picked up and moved south.

A program that makes use of the CBP One app was expanded by the U.S. government in late August to allow immigrants from anywhere in Mexico to schedule an appointment with U.S. customs officers at the border to check if they meet the requirements for parole.

Initial intentions for the app were limited to those who had made it to the northern region of Mexico, but it was changed over the summer to allow people from any region of the country to apply for an appointment.

Migrants have attempted to schedule appointments with the app 64 million times since its launch in early 2023, according to a CBS News report from February. At present, the app allows 1, 450 appointments to be scheduled per day.
