Hezbollah‘s new leader, Naim Qassem, announced on Wednesday that the group could agree to a ceasefire with Israel, provided specific conditions are met. This offer comes amid increased Israeli military actions in Lebanon.
After Israel killed Hassan Nasrallah last month, Qassem assumed control of Hezbollah’s authority. Qassem stated in his opening speech that while Hezbollah may continue to resist Jewish attacks for months, it would be willing to negotiate a peace if Israel made an offer.
He continued, stating that Hezbollah may never request a peace and has not yet received a reliable offer,” we say we accept, but in the conditions that we see as ideal and suitable.”
Najib Mikati, the prime minister of Lebanon, expressed cautious optimism about a prospective peace in the near future.
