On Sunday, a Chinese college student who is n’t a citizen of the United States cast an illegal ballot, and Michigan election officials say the law mandates that they count it.

According to the Detroit News, the unnamed 19-year-old registered to vote on Sunday and” signed a report identifying himself as a U. S. citizen”. The scholar finally cast his unlawful vote, which “was entered into the tabulator”. According to Ann Arbor City Administrator Milton Dohoney Jr., the scholar was “fully informed of what he was doing, and it was not legal,” according to an email sent to city council members this day.
According to Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, the student has been accused of” Unauthorized Elector Attempting To Vote” and” Perjury — Making a False Affidavit For Purpose of Securing Voter Registration.”  ,
He did n’t attempt to vote, he actually voted, and the machine tabulated his choice. But since all vote are key, once a vote is cast and sent through the tabulator, it’s impossible to determine a particular individual’s poll.
But Benson, in a joint declaration with Washtenaw County Prosecutor Eli Savit, also claimed that Michigan’s votes are” protected” and that “noncitizen election is an extremely isolated and unique occasion”.

C’mon then, right-wing voting blockers — there are so few non-citizens who vote, it’s not even worth the trouble of trying to stop it. After all, we’re all virtuous people around. Both people and non-citizens are adults, as far as we are aware, and are expected to follow the rules. They certify that they are telling the truth about being a member by checking a small container on the voter registration software. How dare you issue the words of a person who crossed the border without breaking the law?
It’s like you right-wingers are plotting against a number of legal laborers who have entered the country and murdered Americans. It’s so unique that if you make a odor about it, it must be because you’re a racist.
But just because something is “rare” does n’t mean it’s not happening — or that steps should n’t be taken to prevent such an occurrence. Republicans have fought back against Democrats on policy intended to stop a situation like this. The Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility Act, which amends the 1993 National Voter Registration Act, makes it necessary for potential voters to provide video membership evidence in order to register to vote, was passed by the Republican-led House. Such legislation would have prevented the 19-year-old Chinese national from registering ( and voting ) on Sunday.
Additionally, it would have prevented a recent event in Iowa where Jorge Oscar Sanchez-Vasquez was accused of “registering to vote and improperly voting on the same day, July 16, 2024, in a special election for the Marshalltown City Council,” according to the state’s attorney general.

I have no doubt that the process is “rare”, whatever that means. Less than 100? Less than 1, 000? 10, 000? In fact, there’s no protection for allowing non-citizens to voting when the solution is terribly, absurdly simple.  ,
