A Foreign student at the University of Michigan has been charged after casting an illegal ballot on Sunday. The scholar is a citizen of the United States but not a citizen of the United States.
The Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office authorized criminal charges against a 19-year-old Taiwanese scholar who allegedly registered to vote on Sunday, signed a record claiming to be a U.S. citizen, and cast a vote in a joint statement released on Wednesday by Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and Washtenaw County Prosecutor Eli Savit.
” Just U. S. people can register and vote in our primaries”, the Michigan officials said. It is against the law to rest on any voter registration forms or applications regarding citizen. Doing so is a felony”.
The Foreign student eventually contacted the neighborhood clerk’s office and requested his ballot back, according to The Detroit News.
Andrew McCarthy, a former assistant U. S. counsel for New York’s Southern District, told Fox News that the Chinese non-citizen person’s voting is expected to also matter in the 2024 vote since there is no way for election officials to get the ballot.
The issue is that the poll lacks a PIN number or other kind of identifying details that would later help someone determine who voted for whom, according to McCarthy. ” That’s our determination to , the key vote”.
When the poll is processed through the tabulator, McCarthy claimed, “it gets counted because there’s no way to go back and fetch it.”

The 19-year-old scholar is accused of fraud for fabricating a false affirmation on an oath to register to vote in Michigan, according to The Detroit News. Although the typical sentence for fraud is 15 years in prison, it is not yet obvious what the potential abuse for this type of fraud might be. The Chinese student also faces charges for attempting to cast ballot as an unregistered voter, which could result in a fine of up to$ 2,000 and prison time of up to four years.
In a shared statement, Benson and Savit said,” We’re thankful for the quick motion of the secretary in this case, who took the correct methods and referred the case to law police.” We are also appreciative of law enforcement for conducting a thorough and swift investigation of this event. People who attempts to vote improperly faces major consequences, including but not limited to arrest and prosecution”.
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, a Democrat, likewise released a , speech confirming that her company was conducting an “independent, horizontal analysis” into the illegal voting event.
Nessel said,” We take all claims of voting fraud extremely seriously, and the public should assume everything less”.
