In a tiffling election for the U.S. Senate on Tuesday evening, Republican U.S. Sen. Josh Hawley defeated Democratic opponent Lucas Kunce.
The Associated Press called the competition for Hawley at 9: 28 p. m. EDT Tuesday. With about 45 % of votes counted, Hawley was leading Kunce by a 52%-to-46 % margin, according to The Associated Press.
Kunce was leading Hawley in St. Louis County, winning about 63 % of the vote with about 58 % of votes reported, according to the Associated Press.
On the eastern side of the state, Platte and Clay, two jump regions, had a narrow lead. Hawley was leading with 61 % of the vote in Republican-leaning Buchanan County, with nearly all results reported.
Hawley, 44, was seeking his next six-year name. The previous Missouri attorney general’s activities overturned the 2020 election, which helped to fuel Kunce’s rebel bid against the incumbent, caused a national outcry for them.
Hawley’s embrace of Holy nationalism, which promotes the United States as a Christian country, has even sparked discussion.
Kunce, 42, a Marine veteran, made worker issues main battle planks as he leaned into his mother’s personal history of economic pain.
While Hawley has endorsed specific pro-worker policy, Kunce has portrayed the Republican’s techniques as a casual try to scam seats.
In a 2021 opinion piece, Kunce argued for the safety of the country by attacking Kunce, and Hawley seized on a speech the Democrat made that day.
Kunce’s battle was closely linked to the ballot’s passage allowing transgender surgeries for minors, but Hawley claimed that the measure would allow minors to perform transgender surgeries and that he would not support it.
Kunce spent$ 19.8 million on his charge through Oct. 16, outspending Hawley and an allied political action committee. Combined, the pro-Hawley parties spent$ 18.4 million through mid-October.
The other five Democrats running for statewide positions in Missouri raised a total of$ 3.1 million for their campaigns, compared to the$ 22.2 % raised by Kunce.
Despite having the resources to run a solid operation, polls showed him still trailing Hawley on Election Day.
Kunce voted Tuesday at a catalogue in Independence that is close to where he lives.
