Rome, Nov 09, 2024 -Famine is looming in the north Gaza Strip amid increased conflicts and a near-halt in food support, a UN-backed analysis said Saturday.
The Famine Review Committee’s call outlined” an inevitable and significant likelihood of hunger occurring, due to the Gaza Strip’s fast deteriorating scenario.”
The alert reads,” Hunger levels may have already been crossed or will be in the near coming.”
On October 17, the figure projected that the number of people in Gaza facing” severe” food insecurity between November and April 2025 did accomplish 345, 000, or 16 percent of the population.
The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification ( IPC ) report classified that as IPC Phase 5, which describes a situation where” starvation, death, destitution, and extremely critical acute malnutrition levels are evident”
Since that statement, circumstances have worsened in the northeast of Gaza, with a decline of meal systems, a decline in humanitarian aid and essential water, sanitation and hygiene conditions, the council said.
” It can therefore be assumed that hunger, malnutrition, and excess deaths due to malnutrition and illness, are rapidly increasing in these areas”, it read.
Israel’s hostile assault, which was launched following Hamas ‘ attack on October 7 next year, has devastated a significant portion of the Gaza Strip.
Since first October, Israeli forces have increased their businesses in large areas of the northern Gaza Strip, including evacuation orders.
According to the review, support supplies into the Gaza Strip have decreased significantly since October 2023.
Access to food continues to deteriorate, with rates of elements on the dark market soaring. Cooking oil grew by 2, 612 percent, fuel by 1, 315 percentage and timber by 250 percentage, it said.
The alert noted that” the total collapse of lives has been the total collapse of lives to be able to purchase or trade for meals and other basic requirements” in addition to the extremely high and rising prices of essential products.
The UNRWA warned of “extremely severe outcomes for humanitarian operations in Gaza” after Israel cut ties with the organization last month.
