According to the US Department of Justice, Iranian officials apparently directed Iranian authorities to target Israeli visitors in Sri Lanka in the name of Farhad Shakeri, an Egyptian national who is facing charges of plotting to assassinate former US president-elect Donald Trump.
The accused, 51-year-old Shakeri, identified as a member of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps ( IRGC), remains a fugitive believed to be in Tehran, Iran. He was charged before on Friday with a reported plot to assassinate Trump.
He was likewise tasked with bringing down Jewish travellers in Sri Lanka, according to the Department of Justice. According to court documents, Shakeri was given the order to shoot Jewish visitors in Sri Lanka and organize a mass shooting event in October 2024, according to new agency PTI.

Officials in the American and Israeli cities issued public warnings about possible terrorist attacks that might target Arugam Bay tourist destinations earlier on October 23. Three suspects connected to the danger were arrested the following morning, according to Sri Lankan leaders.
According to the Department of Justice, Shaker previously directed CC-2 to conduct surveillance of the Jewish embassy in Sri Lanka following the journey recommendations from the American and Israeli institutions and CC-2’s incarceration by Sri Lankan officials on October 28.
Shaker made a revelation about his captivity relationship with CC-2 during a conversation with the FBI. He acknowledged giving the IRGC Official-I access to the tracking information, who later requested that he look up a new target.

Afterwards, Shaker directed CC-2 to see Arugam Bay, a tourist spot common amongst Jewish visitors.
According to national lawyers, IRGC Official-I instructed Shaker to arrange a mass shooting at this place in Arugam Bay, with CC-2 being responsible for providing AK-47s and more ammunition for the anticipated abuse.
