Despite fierce fighting between Israeli forces and Hezbollah insurgents, UN peacekeeping key Jean-Pierre Lacroix stated during a visit to Lebanon that the UN is still committed to keeping its peacekeeping force, known as UNIFIL, stationed at all of its locations in southwestern Lebanon.
Despite Israeli demands for soldiers to retreat five kilometers ( three miles ) from the border, UNIFIL has continued to monitor the escalating conflict between Israel and Hezbollah across the so-called Blue Line. 13 peacekeepers were hurt in the battle, according to UNFIL, and Israel has been accused of purposefully destroying study products.
Lacroix made a few visits to some of the wounded troops while they were there.
UNIFIL causes” continue to be deployed in all the posts, and we think it is very important to keep that existence everywhere”, LaCroix said. ” Had we vacated some of the opportunities, then that would have undoubtedly jeopardized UNIFIL’s ability to continue now, but, more importantly, that would have substantially diminished UNIFIL’s ability to play a role tomorrow when the cessation of hostilities occurs, hopefully sooner than later,” he said.
According to Lacroix, there is still a “large discussion” regarding the UN Security Council resolution that ended Israel’s bloody yearlong civil war in 2006 but which neither side has completely implemented.
