The social world was shocked when Trump chose Matt Gaetz to be his next attorney general, which sparked fierce emotions on both sides of the aisle.
I’ve made it known that I do n’t love Gaetz. He seems to thrive on discussion, and despite being a devoted MAGA Republican, he occasionally presents a bigger concern for his own party, such as when he sparked an unwanted intra-party conflict by provoking past House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s ouster.  ,

To be honest, Trump’s collection of Gaetz came out of the blue, and many are wondering why he made it.  ,
According to a document from Politico, there are some ideas about why Gaetz was chosen.
According to the outlet, “almost every Hill Republican we spoke with believes there’s something unusual going on around.” ” We’ve heard repeatedly from perplexing Republicans that Trump may be out of the loop by choosing him, which is possible, and that Gaetz is doing so by serving as the sacrifice lamb to make up for Trump’s eventual choice for AG ( which seems like a stretch ).”
Another idea, according to Politico, suggests that Gaetz “is resigning only from this Congress in order to hinder the Ethics sensor for the time being,” with the intention to remain seated for the upcoming January parliament.
This theory falls apart quickly, and even Politico ca n’t reconcile it.
” We find that very hard to believe, both because it does n’t sound like it would realistically slow the Ethics report’s release”, the outlet notes,” and because House Speaker Mike Johnson has already spoken to Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis suggested starting a particular poll immediately, which would be unnecessary if Gaetz wanted to be sworn in January.

Given that several Republicans have suggested that they are unlikely to support Gaetz, and that the opposition was n’t exactly key when Gaetz resigned from Congress, the first idea seems to make sense. Even if he is not confirmed, it could be that he was looking for a way out of Congress under his own circumstances.
Another theory contends that this is only a fidelity test.
Ezra Klein, a columnist for the NYT, was one of the columnists with the most sharp original reactions. The 2024 equivalent of forcing Sean Spicer to declare that the opening audience was the largest ever, Klein wrote on X. ” These are n’t just appointments. They’re commitment testing”.
In that way, it’s a check for every Republican in the Senate to see how they respond to Trump’s wants. As McConnell steps down as the league’s first new president in a century, the Gaetz account dwarfs that information, which is also a check for incoming Senate Majority Leader John Thune, who won the election yesterday.
Consider it the Kobayashi Maru, the renowned test from” Star Trek” that presents trainees with a no-win situation, as proposed by Senate Republicans. It’s not intended to be passed; rather, it’s intended to reveal something about those who take it.
What specifically it reveals about Senate Republicans, we’re about to find out.
