On Friday nights, Bill Maher unleashed a brutal speech on his HBO show, calling out the increasingly extreme left for the reason why they were elected president in 2024.

When Maher outlined the disconnect between the Democratic Party wealthy and the typical American vote, Maher was right to say it. He criticized the left for spreading polarizing and impossible suggestions that totally alienate the people they claim to represent. I disagree with Maher on so many things, but what’s truly pleasant about Maher’s commentary—especially when you overlook his anti-conservative rhetoric—is that he’s ready to call out his own celebration for the disaster they’ve made and challenge them to reevaluate their methods.
He began by mocking the public’s ability to learn from their mistakes, saying,” when you’re in a tunnel, quit digging, never stay digging”. According to Maher, their inability to change has caused a disconnect between them and the very voters they need to appeal to.
” You wear Queers for Palestine T-shirts and masks two years after the pandemic ended, and you ca n’t define woman— I mean, person who menstruates. You’re the Teachers Union Education Party, and you’ve turned schools and colleges into a joke”.
He added,” You love to speak truth to power, and we always should, but you have completely lost the ability to speak truth to bulls **t”.
Maher’s criticism of the media’s elitism is mainly biting. He points out that the Democratic Party’s fascination with personality politics has alienated citizens, especially black Americans, who are extremely wary of their party’s way. He cited polling results that showed that black voters are less likely to support the media’s liberal plan and are now more likely to believe the party is very serious. ” Dark voters, AKA their supposedly progressive foundation, were more likely to discover the president to liberal than to conservative”, he said. They discovered that citizens wanted Harris to range herself from what they thought the Democratic Party had become: a Portlandia sketch, rather than just Harris.

Kamala Harris did n’t lose because of racism or sexism, Maher also told a hard truth to the left. He cited Barack Obama’s victory in the 2016 presidential election and Hillary Clinton’s common voting victory.
But Maher does n’t just criticize for the sake of it —he’s offering a solution. He urges the remaining to “actually interact with the other half of the country” and take a step back. He argues that the current status of the Democratic Party, with its emphasis on “woke” plans and virtue indicating, has pushed citizens away. When Maher accuses the left of losing sight of common sense, Maher’s frustration is palpable.
Seth Moulton, a top aide to resign, was one of Maher’s more poignant moments in his monologue. He faced criticism for expressing concern about male athletes competing in women’s sports, which led to a top aide’s resignation. Maher underscores the absurdity of the situation, saying,” the campaign manager who resigned…yeah, let that person go”. Anyone who deviates from the most extreme positions is immediately cast aside, according to the left’s ideological purity test. Maher’s point is clear: the left is pushing away reasonable voices in the name of woke ideology.

He’s not wrong.
Maher’s monologue should be a wake-up call to the left. He’s not a conservative—arguably, he’s the furthest thing from it—but his criticism of the far left is spot-on. His call for the left to embrace common sense, engage with voters across the political spectrum, and ditch the identity politics offers a blueprint for how the party could regain its footing—which, in my opinion, would be better for everyone, not just the Democratic Party. A decent Democratic Party would restore America’s greatness.
