The former US pollster J. Ann Selzer announced her retirement from her election-polling career on Sunday, revealing plans to pursue other endeavors and opportunities in response to her false prediction from her Iowa pre-election poll. Republican candidate Donald Trump was favored over Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris in the Iowa surveys, but Trump won the state by a sizable percentage.
Since 1997, Selzer has been in charge of the Iowa Poll. The surveys has long been regarded as a trustworthy indicator of voter sentiment in Iowa. Before the vote, Harris held a 3-point lead over Trump in the last Iowa poll. However, the real election results showed Trump winning by 13 items. Selzer acknowledged the mistake, calling it a “big lose”.
Despite the recent error, the Iowa Poll, established in 1943, has a record of mostly accurate predictions. Selzer, considered a leading poll, oversaw the ballot for various presidential elections, with only one example of wrong predicting the champion.
Selzer stated in a Register op-ed that she had advised the Register that she would no longer maintain her commitment after it expired in 2024 as I transitioned to other endeavors and options as a result of her decision to retire before the 2024 vote.
Would it have been nice if a last surveys had been in line with the effects of Election Day? Of program. It’s ironic that it’s just the same. I’m proud of the work I’ve done for the Register, the Detroit Free Press, the Indianapolis Star, Bloomberg News, and other governmental and private institutions involved in primaries. They were wonderful customers and were content with my work”, she added.
After making an wrong prediction about the results of the 2024 presidential election, The Des Moines Register’s Iowa Poll may change and remain in a completely different format.
