Researchers raise concerns about more shady election and blame same-day voting registration laws.
After being accused of voting against the law while attending the University of Michigan, a Taiwanese student was just just detained. The UM Board of Regents and a election pro claimed that the same-day voter registration regulations are at issue.
According to The Detroit News, Haoxiang Gao, 19, was arraigned this quarter in front of a judge from the Washtenaw County District Court.
Gao is accused of unjustly voting and one count of misdemeanor perjury for obtaining a voter’s registration as a noncitizen.
According to court records, Gao remained “mute” throughout the entire process rather than plead guilty or not guilty when requested at his trial. Gao’s bond was set at$ 5, 000 by magistrate Elisha Fink. He is scheduled to appear in court once on Nov. 21, the Detroit News reported.
Election officials could n’t track down and identify the student’s illegal vote because, according to The Fix, it was previously reported that the student’s ballot was entered through an electronic tabulator.
After signing an oath falsely claiming U.S. citizen, he illegally cast his vote at an election office led by Democrat donors on campus.
Sarah Hubbard, a part of the University of Michigan’s Board of Regents, stated in a phone interview that she is concerned that same-day voting registration regulations open up a window for unregistered voters.
In this case,” the weakness in the system…is that the vote was certainly held to the side until membership was verified”, Hubbard said.
” Instead, the individual signed an oath and then was allowed to vote, and the ballot was soon counted”, she said.
The member of the Board of Regents is “very concerned that others will try to do the same kind of issue today that they know, based on the policy of this incident…it’s quite obvious that you’re a member by knowingly signing an oath.”
” There does not appear to be any process in place to accounting those documents”, she said.

However, she hopes that Gao’s prosecution will deter further voter fraud, even if the law does n’t change.
According to Hubbard, “full trial of the person who did ballot improperly may deter others who may believe that knowingly election is a crime is a good idea.”
She told The Fix,” The local law enforcement is pursuing any treatment and accountability may be required in connection with this incident.”
She added that the school admitted to having citizens and residents of Michigan before the poll before casting their ballots. But there is “plenty of possibility for improvement” in how the school and express handles the next election.
She said,” I hope that both the university and the state of Michigan will continue to work together to make sure that those who are ready to cast ballots really do so.”
Hubbard also said that companies must confirm membership before they hire something,” so we know that it’s probable”.
Election law specialist Hans von Spakovsky, a spokesperson for The College Fix, stated in an email that Michigan’s rules do not properly stop voter fraud.
According to von Spakovsky,” the issue with same-day membership is that it gives election officials no time to review any of the data provided by registrants.”
” Michigan needs to implement significant reforms such as a government-issued picture ID accounts for election, no exact time vote registration”, he stated.
He added that the condition needs to perform” a much better job of maintaining the correctness of its voter registration roll.”
Von Spakovsky responded to a question about whether he thought this was an isolated incident, saying that” there is a lot of evidence that creatures are simply registering to vote without being detected by vote officials.”
The Fix even reached out to the University of Michigan multimedia relationships, Gao’s lawyer, Orlando Simon, and Gao for comment on this account via various letters. Few responded.
