The Icelandic Meteorological Office ( IMO ) reports that a volcano erupted in southwest Iceland late on Wednesday, its seventh eruption since December.
Near the town of Grindavik, the explosion took place at the Sundhnuksgigar geological cleft. Lava is seen coming from a cleft on live video.
” No system was now threatened, but Grindavik– a little angling town– was being evacuated”, IMO specialist Benedikt Ofeigsson told open radio RAS2.
The region’s geological activity is now at its highest level following the eruption. Iceland has 33 effective mountains.
