Previous Florida member and candidate for attorney general under Donald Trump’s leadership announced on Thursday that he would no longer run for the position. Gaetz cited the “distraction” brought on by persistent claims of wrongdoing as the main justification for leaving.
,” While the speed was strong, it is obvious that my assurance was badly becoming a diversion to the vital function of the Trump/Vance Transition”, Gaetz said in a speech. I’ll get removing my title from account to serve as Attorney General because it would be wasteful to spend a further drawn out fight in Washington. On Day 1, Trump’s DOJ may become operational and available.
Following weeks of controversy over claims Gaetz engaged in sexual misconduct, including claims that he paid young girls for sex, was made public. The House Ethics Committee continued its own investigation until Gaetz’s departure from Congress last month despite the Justice Department’s ( DOJ) ending its research earlier this year without processing fees.
The committee apparently had a hard time deciding whether to release its findings this week, leaving the issue unanswered. Gaetz has persistently denied all complaints, calling them unfounded.
In a statement from February, Gaetz’s prosecutors stated that they have spoken with the Court and have been informed that they have concluded their research into Congressman Gaetz and allegations of sex trafficking and obstruction of justice.

President-elect Trump, who nominated Gaetz only over a week ago, expressed love for his alliance’s work. On Truth Social, Trump wrote,” I greatly appreciate Matt Gaetz ‘ current efforts to get elected prosecutor general.” ” He was doing very well but, at the same time, did not want to be a distraction for the Administration, for which he has little value. I look forward to watching Mattt accomplish great things in the future.
In his time in Congress, Trump had praised Gaetz as a steadfast supporter and cited his commitment to reforming the DOJ as a major justification for the election.
Gaetz’s drawback leaves the Attorney General placement vacant, with Trump then considering different candidates from a large list that includes past DOJ officials, existing members of Congress, and outdoors legal experts.
Fox News listed notable names on the little list, which include:
– Mark Paoletta, former White House counsel and lawyers to then-Vice President Mike Pence.
– Andrew Bailey, Missouri Attorney General, known for his complaints against the Biden administration and liberal legal campaigning.
Also in a room controlled by Republicans, it was unclear whether Gaetz may have gotten the votes needed to fill the crucial Cabinet position. However, even in that situation, Senate confirmation was still a possibility.
