At the age of 94, Fred Harris, a prominent US senator and proponent of Democratic Party measures, passed away on Saturday. His wife, Margaret Elliston, confirmed his demise.
” Fred Harris passed away peacefully at dawn of this night due to natural causes. He was 94. He was a great and devoted person. His storage is a blessing”, Elliston said in a text message.
Harris served eight years as Oklahoma’s representative in the US Senate, starting in 1964 with a desk vacated. He presided over the Democratic National Committee until 1969, and he remained there until 1970. Following domestic disagreements at the 1968 Democratic National Convention, he worked to bring the party together during this time.
After leaving the Senate, Harris relocated to New Mexico in 1976. He co-authored or edited more than ten publications and teaches political science at the University of New Mexico. He concentrated mainly on politicians and Congress before turning to literature with a secret about the Great Depression in Oklahoma.
Throughout his career, Harris advocated for legal rights and anti-poverty plans, constantly supporting laws designed to assist minorities and underprivileged communities.
