After mortally shooting her Black neighbor during a long-running argument, a White Florida woman was given a 25-year prison sentence for murder.
Susan Lorincz, 60, was convicted in August for killing 35-year-old Ajike” A. J”. Owens in June 2023, following a fight outside Lorincz’s residence in Ocala. The two girls fought over Owens ‘ kids playing near Lorincz’s home.
The neighbors ‘ conflict had been going on for some time.

Owens, a mother of four, had gone to Lorincz’s entrance to fight her about reportedly throwing objects at her children—something Lorincz denied. According to testimony, Owens was pounding on Lorincz’s door when she fired a second shot through it.
Lorincz claimed she acted in self-defense, claiming that Owens had harassed her for years and that she was afraid for her career. However, the judge did not accept this state.
Despite facing prison sentences of up to 30 years, Circuit Judge Robert Hodges compared her troubled childhood and mental health issues to her word. Judge Hodges argued that the shooting in this case was entirely unnecessary. ” The filming, I find, was based more in anger than in fear”.
In a statement to the jury, Lorincz expressed regret over the tragedy, saying,” I so wish I could go up and change issues so she was also here. I always intended to kill somebody”.
Owens ‘ relatives, who pushed for the maximum sentence for Lorincz, shared their grief over the lost, with Owens ‘ mother, Pamela Dias, saying,” We’re hurting with a pain that will never, never go away”.
Lorincz’s prosecutor argued for a lighter sentence, citing her mental heath and claiming Owens was the offender. However, the prosecutor emphasised the profound effect on Owens ‘ kids, who will grow up without their mom.
