Gov. At a press conference on Tuesday about retail theft, Kathy Hochul (D-NY ) stated that she would be” the first one to call ICE” if a migrant or illegal immigrant violates the law.
Several different governors have pledged to defend illegal immigrants from President-elect Donald Trump’s mass deportation programs. She emphasized her support for finding employment for asylum seekers, according to the governor of New York.
” That’s separate from people who are criminals”, she said. I’ll be the first to phone ICE and request that they leave if one violates the law.”
While Hochul’s approach is n’t remarkably different from other Democrats, most have agreed that those who break the law considerably should face repercussions, the majority have flat-out refused to support the Trump administration’s national immigration power.
Gov. California’s Governor, Gavin Newsom (D-CA ), called a legislative special session to oppose Trump’s conservative agenda. ” The freedoms we hold dear in California are under attack— and we wo n’t sit idle”, Newsom said in a statement. ” California has faced this challenge previously, and we know how to respond. We are prepared to fight in court, and we will take every precaution to give Californians the support and tools they need for a prosperous society.
” No one’s off the table”, Tom Homan, Trump’s nominated “border czar” , , said at the Republican National Convention , in July. ” If you’re in the country improperly, you better be looking over your head”.
Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY ) who might run for governor in 2026, quickly criticized Hochul for her statement.
” If Governor Hochul really meant what she said, Laken Riley would still be alive today”, he said.
” The truth is she does n’t, and she even helped usher in NY’s sanctuary state status. New Yorkers wo n’t forget about this shameless attempt to conceal her past.

In response to criticism from Lawler and another gubernatorial candidate, Ritchie Torres (D-NY), Hochul stated that she would be running for reelection, but that she was n’t currently “governing and doing my job.”
The government has been greatly unhappy for her delay, then restoration, of gridlock pricing and managing of migrants in the state. While she assisted House Democrats in securing their support, her work protection is still at risk.
