Georgetown Law is advised to make better use of its resources to provide female students, according to professors.
After a pregnant mother claimed she was denied an interview lodging at Georgetown University’s law school, academics and pro-life officials are calling on Georgetown University to do more to assist female students.
First, the law college refused to grant Brittany Lovely’s demand, telling her” Motherhood is not for the Tiny of Heart”, according to a , complaint created by her peers.
This year, however, a Georgetown director told The College Fix the school “reached a mutually agreeable option” with Beautiful. The spokesperson declined to provide more information, stating that” Georgetown does not publicly post on specific student things.”
Sweet claimed that Georgetown agreed to extend a transition period from mid-December to mid-January, according to The Washington Post. Individuals may ask delay in emergency situations, like as giving birth”.
” That’s great that they figured out a way to do that”, Lovely told the Post,” But why have I been fighting them for months”?
Lovely’s circumstance, which attracted nationwide attention, has raised questions and concerns about the school’s commitment to supporting fresh and expecting parents.
Two academics at local organizations in Washington, D. C. urged Georgetown instructors and executives to perform better.
Michael New, a teacher at the Catholic University of America, said he was not surprised that Lovely’s ask first was refused.
In an internet to The Fix, New wrote that “it is undoubtedly important for schools to make accommodations for expectant and parental individuals.” Making compelling intellectual or religious arguments in favor of legitimate protection for preborn children is more important than being pro-life. Being pro-life methods providing substantial support for pregnant women, families, and babies in want”.
The Georgetown University has an “LGBT centre on campus,” according to the business teacher, who worries about the institution’s commitment to hiring “faithful Catholics.”
While some of its learners are active in the pro-life movement, New said he is not aware that college officials are” creating a culture of life.”
” Georgetown University, like some Catholic Universities, has moved aside from its Catholic history”, New said. They have given the Catholic faith precedence over fame and ranking.
John Banzhaf, a laws professor at George Washington University in D. C., said the faculty even failed Beautiful.
” Georgetown Law was seriously at fault for not agreeing to the accommodation, even if the law did n’t requirement”, Banzhaf told The Fix in an email Tuesday. It is even more troubling that both Title IX and the DC Human Rights Act mandate it, and that a law school that claims to teach the rules and observe the rules violated the law.
” Unequal to all the other students who are not expecting.”
Sweet, a second-year law undergraduate, told the Washington Post her due time is Dec. 2 and one of her test is scheduled for Dec. 13. She claimed to have inquired about taking her interview earlier or working remotely with the university.
However, the college told her “it would be unjust to all the other non-birthing learners in her course” if she was given particular accommodations, according to the plea.
Beautiful brought her newborn child to the exam, according to the university’s recommendation. Officials gave her more time to finish the complaint if she needed to caregiver her child.
The complaint urging Georgetown to give Lovely’s ask garnered more than 7, 000 names, according to CNN.
A Georgetown director stated in a statement to The Fix that it “is committed to providing a caring, supportive environment for expectant and parental kids” and that it “offers academic and practical assets” to them.
The director stated that” we have reached a socially acceptable solution with the student who raised problems.”
However, some people expressed concern that unless the college makes changes, a similar occurrence might occur again.
According to Banzhaf of George Washington University, Georgetown’s laws instructors should have been more proactive.
” Rather, at most, they joined with many others in signing a plea begging GU to do what both the rules and common civility requires.’ We will never lift a finger on you, he told The Fix,” Prayer please follow the law voluntarily, since you wo n’t be forced to do it,” he continued.
” As a result, there is no law, and the next female student will also have to beg”, Banzhaf said.
Women “meet much,” according to the statement.
Pro-life advocates in Washington, D.C., expressed concern that higher education institutions are n’t investing in helping individuals who have children.
Olivia Turner, chairman of the Virginia Society for Human Life, said Georgetown had to “get pushed … into the 21st era” to face the reality of helping female students succeed.
In an interview Tuesday, Turner told The Fix that , Virginia State University is doing a better job by providing unique cover for soon-to-be mother and, finally, infant care so individuals can continue their studies after giving birth.
” This is the clever way to do things, and it’s surprising that it’s taken til 2024 and 2025 now to see a growth like that take place at a school”, she said in the telephone interview. ” It should be happening everyday”.
In today’s society, Turner argued that it is crucial for every college to help and accommodate female students.
” Because pregnant women are n’t in confinement anymore, it’s not 1902″, Turner said. We exercise and many of us work until the day our children are born. Pregnancy is not a problem, but it requires special care and treatment.
Serrin Foster even advocates for success for expectant and parental students. Foster, the leader of Feminists for Life of America, said she is proud for Georgetown’s fresh decision to grant Sweet apartments.
In an email to The Fix on Tuesday, Foster stated,” I did reach out to the presidency and was very pleased with the resolution.” Some individuals worry that this was an exemption, but, in my opinion, the law school has established precedent and followed the law.
The law school, according to her, has been most essential in meeting Brittany and Baby Lovely ‘ requires since our first FFL Pregnancy and Parenting Resource Forum nearly three decades ago.
Foster claimed that in 1997, her business and Georgetown partnered to hold an event promoting pregnancy and parenthood tools. She added that “women deserve better” and that more institutions will want to support female students.
” ]Attorney ] Sarah Weddington argued Roe v. Wade in part that women could not graduate if pregnant”, Foster said. ” We do not misunderstand people. They are capable of studying, reading, thinking, and learning. Childbirth can be a trip. It does n’t have to be a dead end”.
