LONDON: William Hague, a former president of the Conservative Party and foreign secretary, was elected on Wednesday as the next chancellor of the University of Oxford, a mostly ceremonial part which dates back ages.
For what is regarded as one of the most significant positions in higher education, Chris Patten, Britain’s next chancellor of Hong Kong and a former top Conservative politician, was appointed as his successor.
Peter Mandelson, a former labor secretary, and three different candidates were his main rivals.
Hague will be the 160th observed president in the school’s story, a position that dates back at least 800 years, according to the school, who “won a majority of help in the last round of voting for the post.”
