A group of Democratic lawmakers are urging President Joe Biden to” Trump-proof” some of his immigration laws before resigning from office in January 2025.
” In addition to supporting strong border security, we are eager to ensure that]Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals ] recipients ,]Temporary Protected Status ] holders, and other immigrants who are critical members of our communities and economies are not forgotten during this busy time”, the trio wrote.
President-elect Donald Trump campaigned strongly on executing large-scale arrests if elected, and easily won the 2024 battle over Vice President Kamala Harris next quarter.
The group of senators are still pressing Biden to take additional steps to stop arrests. Two of them hail from states that Harris won, while the third, Cortez Masto, is from Nevada, where Trump won but GOP Senate candidate Sam Brown lost to Sen. Jacky Rosen (D-NV ).
The lawmakers are urging Trump to expand TPS for refugees from nations like Ecuador, Nicaragua, and El Salvador, stating that “nationals from these three states cannot return home due to severe conditions on the ground.”
Republicans, somewhat including Vice President-elect J. D. Vance, have argued that Biden is abusing TPS to give a veneer of legitimacy to often illegal immigration, saying the president has used the method to help in hundreds of thousands of workers.
Before he leaves office on January 20, 2025, the senators urged Biden to quickly process renewal requests and enhance parole requests to defend DACA recipients.
