On Sunday, a gate connecting two Portuguese says collapsed, injuring at least one person and causing a sulfuric acid flow. The incident occurred on the BR-226 roadway between Estreito, Maranhão, and Aguiarnópolis, Tocantins.
According to a statement from Reuters, it was the main portion of the 533-meter Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira Bridge that sagged as vehicles crossed.
When the gate immediately gave way, a city councillor from Aguiarnópolis, Elias Junior, was filming a film highlighting security concerns about it. Junior was requesting attention from the authorities during his recording to address the structural issues with the gate, highlighting its inability to support large lorry traffic. The entire structure began to crumble, forcing him to retreat quickly as a result of a major break along the bridge’s shoulder.
As a result of the crumble, a cargo truck carrying sulphuric acid fell into the Tocantins River, according to the National Department of Transport Infrastructure.
One death was confirmed and one victim was saved by rescuers. Initial reports quoted by Reuters indicate two cars, a vehicle, and a bike even plunged into the valley, which is over 50 meters serious, potentially involving 11 people.
According to the Tocantins fire department, divers suspended their research on Sunday night after discovering a buried ship leaking sulfuric acid.
The bridge, opened in 1960, is a reinforced concrete construction. It forms part of the BR-226 highway linking BrasÃlia to Belém, the anticipated host city for second week’s UN Climate Change Conference.
