A 40-year-old man was killed by a fish while fishing with his home near Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, leaders and local media reported. The incident happened on Saturday evening near Humpy Island, Australia.
” The gentleman was fishing with community members when he was bitten by a shark”, Australia’s Queensland state police said in a statement. Emergency service confirmed the shark bit the person on the spine, causing lethal injuries. At the picture, he passed away about an hour and a half after.
Local advertising identified the victim as Luke Walford, a junior pastor at the Cathedral of Praise religion in Rockhampton, Queensland. Although social media photos from 2021 display him holding huge fish while wearing a suit on a vessel, police couldn’t affirm whether he was spearfishing at the time.
Walford passed away from a” significant lethal wound to his neck,” according to a spokesperson for the Queensland hospital.
Humpy Island is part of the Great Barrier Reef’s Keppel Bay Islands National Park and is known for traveling, diving, and snorkeling.
The most recent deadly shark attack in Australia took place in December 2023 when a 15-year-old boy was killed by a alleged great white shark in South Australia. According to a national collection, Australia has recorded over 1, 200 animal situations since 1791, with more than 250 mortality. Most major shark bites involve light fish, rooster fish, and tiger sharks.
