With the introduction of the Healthy Homework Act, formally known as AB 2999, California has taken a significant step to lessen the workload on students, according to Newsweek.
The legislation, signed by governor Gavin Newsom in September, aims to address student pressure while promoting equitable teaching and well-being.
This breakthrough law urges school districts to develop attentive research policies for all grades, but does not explicitly ban it.

The work encourages institutions to assess both the quantity and quality of projects, taking into account resources available to students to complete their work, for as parental support and technology. It also addresses the damaging effects of excessive research, including sleep deprivation, problems, stress, and various physical health problems.
A poll of 15, 000 California high school students by the non-profit organization Challenge Success is one source of research supporting the policy. According to the study, 45 % of respondents cited homework as a significant source of stress, and more than half described some tasks as unproductive busywork.
Pilar Schiavo, the Democratic assemblywoman behind the bill, explained her motivation:” The top reason ]students drop out ] is because kids are getting behind… Too much homework can overwhelm them”. Her sixth-grade child, Sofia Johnson, shared her problems:” Homework is exhausting. It’s overwhelming”, Johnson was quoted as saying to Newsweek.
Denise Pope, director of Challenge Success, highlighted the importance of scholar type, saying,” We believe it is important to take student tones into discussions about policies that affect their well-being”.
By January 2026, the California department of education will be able to issue rules for school regions. By the 2027-28 academic year, colleges are encouraged to acquire detailed research guidelines.
California hopes to give its students ‘ mental and physical health a priority with this regulation, making it possible to provide a more sensible educational experience.
