In a crucial vote for which he did not have the bulk in the first round, House Speaker Mike Johnson was reelected as the listener on Friday. Before the second round of voting was set to begin, two GOP holdouts– Reps. Ralph Norman (R-SC ) and Keith Self (R-Texas )– changed their vote in a surprising turn of events.
In a beautiful spin, Donald Trump spoke with the two GOP holdouts before they cast their ballots, according to Punchbowl News.
With 434 politicians in attendance, the boundary for Johnson to get elected Speaker of the House was 218.
Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky. ) was the sole no vote.
” Gratitude to Speaker Mike Johnson for obtaining an unheard Vote of Confidence in Congress. Mike will be a Wonderful Speaker, and our Country will be the beneficiary”, Donald Trump congratulated after the election.
” The People of America have waited four times for Common Sense, Strength, and Leadership. They’ll get it now, and America may be greater than actually before”!
Johnson worked into the day to affect conservative holdouts, but he arrived with apparent confidence despite receiving opposition from his own GOP acquaintances. Without a speech for the House, Johnson’s failure could stifle Monday’s legislative confirmation of Trump’s 2024 triumph. Yet funding from Trump himself, often a sure bet for Republicans, was no promise Johnson will remain in power.
” We don’t have time for drama”, Johnson said as he walked into the Capitol.
Trump gave the Louisiana Republican a second round of help. Trump previously stated,” A win for Mike now will be a huge win for the Republican Party.”
