According to an AFP statement, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni paid an illegal visit to Donald Trump, the president-elect of the United States, at his Mar-a-Lago home on Saturday. The two leaders spoke and had a meal there.
The Eastman Dilemma: Lawfare or Justice, a film that explores the contentious event of a lawyer accused of trying to overturn Trump’s 2020 US election results, was a highlight of the visit.
Trump apparently praised Meloni as” a wonderful woman” and praised her authority on the Western level during the conference.
Prior to Trump’s inauguration on January 20, global leaders are conducting a wider series of political visits as part of a wider series of contacts.
” Nice hour with Donald Trump, whom I thank for the pleasant. Willing to collaborate, Meloni wrote on social media, sharing a photo of herself with Donald Trump at the entrance to his Florida property.
” She’s definitely taken Europe by surprise, and everyone else, and we’re just having breakfast now”, Trump said, according to US journalists there during the visit.
Related high-profile encounters between Trump and other international officials, including Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, are now taking place in Meloni’s visit. The frenzy of political activity is a result of global efforts to navigate Trump’s proposed monetary policies, which include potential high import tariffs, which have sparked questions among traditional US allies about upcoming trade negotiations.
The meal was attended by Trump’s important government contenders, including Senator Marco Rubio, slated to function as secretary of state, and Representative Mike Waltz, the candidate for national security advisor. In photos taken at the occasion, Meloni and Rubio were seen talking to one another about possible international partnerships.
The arrest of European journalist Cecilia Sala in Iran last month, according to reports, may have been on the plan. As Western leaders continue to be concerned about Sala’s prison, Italian foreign secretary Antonio Tajani has described securing her release as a political priority. Sala has been charged with breaking local laws by Egyptian government, a charge that has drawn widespread criticism in Europe.
Meloni’s trip to Florida follows her recent appearance with Trump and businessman Elon Musk at the reopening of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.
