President , Joe Biden , has decided to block the sale of , United States Steel Corp.  , to Japan ‘s , Nippon Steel Corp., according to three people with knowledge of the matter.
The , White House , news of the choice is planned for Friday, some of the people said. The individuals requested privacy to discuss a sensitive matter.
The , Washington Post , earlier reported the walk.
The president has indicated his opposition to the proposed$ 14.1 billion merger, though the , White House , has never said outright that he would block the deal.  , The Committee on Foreign Investment , in , the United States , next month deadlocked on its assessment over the order and left the last call with Biden. He has until the beginning of the next week to make a choice.
The deal, initially announced in , December 2023, became a political problem during the , U. S.  , presidential election campaign after harsh criticism arose from the influential , United Steelworkers , coalition. The question that remained in the wake of the review was whether the sale of the historic American business would pose a threat to national security.
US Steel didn’t listen to a request for comment.  , Nippon Steel , declined to comment earlier Friday.
