As raging fire swept through the Los Angeles area, at least five people died, and over 1, 000 buildings were reduced to ashes, according to authorities.
The flames, fueled by strong Santa Ana breezes, have forced thousands to leave their homes and businesses, with many fleeing smoke-filled mountains and celebrity-filled districts. Governor Gavin Newsom of California declared a state of emergency as fire raged throughout Los Angeles.
The imposing blazes erupted on Tuesday and were fueled in some places by winds gusting up to 70 mph ( 112 kph ), causing an inferno that firefighters struggled to contain. For a time, the breezes rendered underwater firefighting efforts very dangerous. By Wednesday morning, however, firefighting airplane resumed activities, dropping water and additives over the flames.
More than 1, 400 firefighters have been dispatched to the fight, according to Governor Gavin Newsom, with Oregon, which has dispatched 240 paramedics and 60 vehicles. All off-duty officers were issued an extraordinary visit to join the fight, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.
According to preliminary estimates from AccuWeather, these fires caused between$ 52 billion and$ 57 billion in damage and economic costs. The damage is concentrated in Pacific Palisades, where at least 1, 000 buildings have been decimated, making the Palisades Fire the most dangerous in Los Angeles story. In an effort to combat the infernos, firefighting planes even record videos of them removing liquid from the Pacific Ocean and releasing it over private areas.
The fire’s closeness to classic landmarks, including the Hollywood Sign, has heightened public concern, with some people reporting lights visible from across Los Angeles.
The destruction has resulted in a wave of support, with neighboring state and local authorities stepping in to help rescue efforts. The Wildfire Alliance, a partnership between the town’s fire department and MySafe: LA, is constantly documenting and responding to the issue.
