Donald Trump, the president-elect, is on the verge of becoming the commander in chief once more, this time as a criminal who has been able to avoid sentencing himself in three of his four criminal cases.
Republicans criticized the New York hush-money situation, in which a judge found Trump innocent of all 34 misdemeanor counts of falsifying business information so that he and his attorneys could conceal payments made to original porn star Stormy Daniels in exchange for her silence regarding their alleged illicit affair in 2006 before the 2016 election.
” It’s a bulls *** conviction that says more about our broke political system than it does about Trump’s personal conduct”, Feehery, a partner at EFB Advocacy, told the Washington Examiner. With this conviction, the Democrats have done more to undermine trust in our judicial system than any other candidate has ever said or done.
Former U.S. Attorney Bud Cummins also criticized the defendants involved in the case, particularly Merchan, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, and Cyrus Vance Jr., arguing that “lawfare is out of control.” Vance, however, did decline to prosecute the matter.
The other 49 states should give New York prosecutions the same credibility as convictions from Russia or Cuba, Cummins told the Washington Examiner. This had to be stopped, and voters thankfully took action in November.
Presidential biographer Craig Shirley once more stated that Trump “was elected and everyone knew then of the other false accusations against him, and he still won.”
According to Shirley, “liberals will try to make something of this by demonstrating they have nothing to learn from the outcome of the election.” ” This will only make him stronger”.
There is at least one practical ramification, according to Cummins, despite the fact that Trump did not suffer politically from his criminal cases, winning last year’s election against Vice President Kamala Harris in the Electoral College and popular vote.
” Federal law imposes criminal sanctions on any felon in possession of a firearm“, Cummins, the attorney, said, adding Trump retains his voting rights because of New York and Florida state law.
As with everything related to Trump, reactions will be polarized, per Claremont McKenna College politics professor , John J. Pitney, Jr.
” Supporters will say the conviction was an injustice. Opponents will say the lack of punishment is an injustice”, Pitney told the Washington Examiner.
Former Maryland Attorney General Douglas Gansler, who is currently a partner at Cadwalader, Wickersham &, Taft LLP, is one of those opposers who claimed that the fact that we have a president who has been sentenced to prison is more important to us than it does to him.
The sharp contrast between the humility, humanity, empathy, and character of former president Carter and President Trump, who famously declared in a debate that he could shoot someone on Fifth Avenue without hurting him or his supporters, was highlighted this week, Gansler told the Washington Examiner.  ,
Merchan told the president-elect that” the only lawful sentence that allows entry of a judgment of conviction without encroaching upon the highest office in the country is an unconditional discharge,” according to Merchan during Friday’s sentencing hearing for Trump in New York City.
” Ordinary citizens do not receive those legal protections. The president’s office provides those extensive protections to the office holder, and the citizenry recently decided that you should once more enjoy those benefits, including the supremacy clause and presidential immunity,” Merchan said. They do not reduce the crime’s seriousness or in any way support its commission. The ability to obliterate a jury verdict is one of the things they do not.
Trump spoke before Merchan from Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, via Microsoft Teams, repeating his complaints that the case was an example of” a weaponization of government” and, in doing so, displaying no contrition. Although Justice Amy Coney Barrett sided with Chief Justice John Roberts and their liberal counterparts, he had previously requested that the Supreme Court stop Merchan from issuing him a sentencing order.
” This has been a very terrible experience”, Trump said. ” I believe it has been a huge setback for New York and the New York court system,” he said.
Trump also shared a statement on his social media platform Truth Social in which he pledged to “restore the trust of Americans in our once great System of Justice” and explained how he intends to appeal the “hoax” case and “despicable charade” of sentencing.
” The real Jury, the American People, have spoken, by Re-Electing me with an overwhelming MANDATE in one of the most consequential Elections in History”, he wrote. ” As the American People have seen, this” case “had no crime, no damages, no proof, no facts, no Law, only a highly conflicted Judge, a star witness who is a disbarred, disgraced, serial perjurer, and criminal Election Interference”.

The president-elect’s lawsuits against him for mishandling classified documents and engaging in a plot to overturn the results of the 2020 election interference brought by special counsel Jack Smith have been dismissed, but not for all of his co-defendants. Since Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis ‘ disqualification from the case due to her personal relationship with special prosecutor Nathan Wade, the state’s case against Trump in Georgia has been pending.
Trump did face civil penalties for defamation, including for business fraud, in addition to E. Jean Carroll’s sexual abuse and defamation.
