The reckless decisions made by leaders at every stage, from state to local government, have been exposed by the fire that have raged in Los Angeles County over the past year. Scrutiny of Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has mainly intensified, and for good reason. For example, she was in Ghana as the flames broke out, despite a vow not to travel internationally. In a letter sent to LAFD Chief Kristin Crowley in November, the officer warned of serious staffing shortages and coaching gaps. The office was extremely undermanned, yet the president’s office apparently ignored or even buried the notice.  ,

According to the report, Crowley wrote to the town’s fire commission on November 18 to ask them to communicate her fears to Bass and the city council. The town’s fire commissioners were a five-member committee appointed by Bass. She highlighted that the fire agency’s staffing levels had remained stagnated for years, even as the city’s population grew considerably.
The LAFD’s present personnel, implementation model, and size have certainly changed since the 1960s, according to Crowley, noting that a rise in crisis calls combined with a shortage of fire stations had led to longer response times.

Crowley’s letter also pointed out that in 2022, 61 % of the district’s firefighters failed to meet the national standard of a four-minute first reaction time. The National Fire Protection Association recommends a percentage of 1.51 to 1.81 rescuers per 1, 000 inhabitants for places like Los Angeles, but according to Crowley, the area just maintains 0.91 rescuers per 1, 000 people.
Two months later, the Los Angeles region experienced traditional fire. Since last week, 37, 000 hectares and more than 12, 000 buildings have burned, 16 people have died, and more than 150, 000 are under evacuation orders.
As the crisis unfolded, Crowley’s note disappeared from a city site. In a Thursday article, the New York Times made no mention of the note. Crowley requested a substantial budget increase in April to enhance firefighting efforts and increase wildfire suppression efforts despite anticipated retirements.
