US lawmakers introduce resolution to designate January as Tamil language and heritage month

A group of fifteen politicians, led by Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, have introduced a solution to identify January as the month of Tamil language and history in the US House of Representatives. The announcement was made as Pongal, a significant Tamil produce festival, was about to begin.
The solution seeks to recognize the efforts of the Tamil-American group, which now amounts over 350, 000 in the United States.
Krishnamoorthi, a Tamil-American himself, said,” As a Tamil-American, I am proud to offer this republican quality honoring the Tamil language, history, and society in the US and around the world”.
The decision has been co-sponsored by five different Indian-American politicians: Ro Khanna, Ami Bera, Shri Thanedar, Pramila Jayapal, and Suhas Subramanyam, as well as Nicole Malliotakis, Ilhan Omar, Yvette Clarke, Sara Jacobs, Deborah Ross, Danny Davis, Dina Titus, Don Davis, and Summer Lee.
Tamil, one of the nation’s oldest language, has over 80 million speakers worldwide and a prosperous literary and cultural background spanning millennia. The quality has received strong support from several Tamil-American companies.
” America is a tile of different languages, cultures, ideas, and traditions, and it is my sincere wish that this resolution does shine a light on the rich and unique culture, as well as the extraordinary achievements, of the Tamil-American community today”, Krishnamoorthi said, urging Congress to act quickly in adopting the resolution.
The US Tamil motion group and Lankans for equality and relief echoed these views, highlighting the importance of preserving Tamil customs and the community’s contribution to strengthening America’s social fabric. ” Tamil-Americans cherish our rich and ancient speech, customs, and culture and know that we have little to add to America’s unique unique and vibrant patchwork of practices”, the US Tamil Action Group said in a statement.
