Secretary of the Navy , Carlos Del Toro , announced that a Virginia-class underwater may be named for the town of Norfolk.
The submarine may follow the example of three other ships that were named after the princess city. One was a warship president used in the late 1700s, the other was a Los Angeles-class nuclear attack underwater used for about 30 times until 2015, and the second was a brigantine send used in the late 1700s.
” Today’s submarine force is the most capable force in the world and in the history of , U. S. Navy”, Del Toro said in a statement. The names of the upcoming submarines that will shield us from the waves deep below the ocean are honored and privileged to me.
The new attack submarine was intended to search for and destroy enemy submarines and surface ships, carry out intelligence and surveillance missions, engage in mine warfare, and engage in other battle operations, according to the Navy.
In its announcement of the naming, the , Navy , noted Norfolk’s long history of shipbuilding, marine operations and military installations. Norfolk and the rest of , Hampton Roads , host more than 82, 000 active-duty military personnel and multiple installations. Norfolk, the largest naval station in the world, is also there.
Ann Holton, wife of Sen.  , Tim Kaine, will sponsor the new USS Norfolk. Del Toro will give names to two additional submarines. Future USS Potomac and USS Brooklyn will join the USS Norfolk.
