A plan to help Chicago police to assist in federal immigration police was blocked by the Chicago City Council. &nbsp,

The plan would have allowed Chicago authorities to “work with federal immigration officers or organizations” when someone is arrested or convicted for “drug-related actions”, “gang-related activities”, “prostitution-related actions”, or a” sexual violence involving a minor”. In a crucial 39-11 vote, government users stopped two city aldermans ‘ proposed legislation from coming up for a vote Wednesday, properly voting down the plan.

” It was very evident now: Thirty-nine alderpeople aren’t actually going to satisfy the discussion. We think that we should continue to be a sanctuary area. We think the loving city legislation is carrying out its intended purpose,” Ald. Jessie Fuentes said. ” So they can try, but they’ll find 39 vote every single time”.

The Chicago Police Department also objected to the proposal, calling it a “violation of express legislation,” as it didn’t know how to identify those broad categories and determine what offences fall under.

Ald. Raymond Lopez, the plan’s major sponsor, said he would continue to work to reform specific protections for illegal immigrants in Chicago but did not offer specifics on what he would transform about his unsuccessful proposal, &nbsp, according&nbsp, to WBEZ Chicago. &nbsp,

There is a lot of talk about there should be changes, according to Lopez, but saying that and next walking away from the conversation is not how you move policy,” we heard a lot of talk now.” Our phones have never been turned off, our doors have always been available, and our emails are still working.

The state’s vote comes just weeks before President-elect Donald Trump, who has vowed to kill the deportation-operation-in-american-history/” target=”_blank” rel=”noopener” title=””>largest imprisonment in U. S. past, is sworn into office again.

The city’s police department is prohibited from working and coordinating with federal immigration enforcement under the city’s Welcoming City Ordinance. &nbsp,

Even if Immigration and Customs Enforcement requests, CPD cannot “arrest, detain, or continue to detain a person solely on the grounds that they are not legally present in the United States or have committed a civil immigration violation.” Additionally, it’s generally forbidden to contact a police officer in Chicago regarding their immigration status. &nbsp,

Additionally, the state-level Illinois TRUST Act largely forbids that same kind of coordination with federal agents throughout the state, which is why CPD opposes Lopez’s suggestion.

However, through a so-called ICE detainer, a document that asks local police to hold someone in custody for 48 hours past their expected release to allow an immigration enforcement officer to arrive, ICE agents can ask for assistance from local municipalities.

Lopez told WBEZ Chicago that, in line with his proposal, he expects CPD to respect an ICE detainer, which is the main way he sees it cooperating with immigration enforcement officers.
