The US Justice Department filed a complaint against Houston County, Georgia, on Thursday, accusing the state’s election system of discriminating against Black citizens.
The complaint claims that the state’s process of electing commission, where all electors elect each director, violates the Voting Rights Act. Black citizens, who make up nearly one-third of the public, are said to be badly outvoted by the white people.
According to the complaint quoted by the Associated Press,” White voters cast their ballots properly as a union to defeat Black citizens ‘ recommended candidate”- which would mean that the election system prevents Black individuals from winning.

Just one Black commissioner has been elected since the end of the Civil War, and Chairman Dan Perdue is one of the latest commission.
The Justice Department contends that the state’s electoral process does not offer Black individuals a good chance to win. It has suggested that dividing the state into smaller towns, each electing its own director, may make elections fairer for Black citizens.
The state commission responded by saying they were looking into the claims. They promised to follow the rules if an inspection uncovers a violation. The Justice Department is urging the court to halt county-wide elections and advocate for a more diverse program.
Robins Air Force Base, which is Georgia’s largest industrial complex, is also located in Houston County, which is largely remote. The basic employs 22, 000 individuals, including military people, citizens, and companies.
