Donald Trump will have his hand on two Bibles during the swearing-in ceremony on Monday. One will be the Lincoln Bible which was first used in 1861 to swear in the 16th US president, but the other will have some emotional significance. The other Bible was the one given to Trump by his mother in 1955 to mark his Sunday Church Primary School graduation at First Presbyterian Church, in Jamaica, New York.
On the front support of the Bible, Trump’s title is embossed on the lower percentage. There are church leaders ‘ signatures and other information about the time it was presented to him, but nothing about the support.
Donald Trump and President Barack Obama have used the Lincoln Bible three occasions since then, each at his presidencies.
Obama also took the oath of office in 2013 by keeping his hands on two Books, one of which was owned by Martin Luther King, Jr., and the other of which was the Lincoln Bible.
As it was first done for George Washington in 1789, leaders take the oath keeping their fingers on the Bible. According to reports, administrators forgot to bring a Bible to Washington’s swearing-in service and thus he borrowed one from a Masonic house.
Another leaders who were sworn in with the Bible that Washington used contain Jimmy Carter, David D. Eisenhower, Warren G. Harding, and George H. W. Bush.
Washington also established a law by kissing the Bible after taking the oath of office. Leaders followed suit up until 1853 when Franklin Pierce rubbed his left on the Bible to end the practice.
