Insult to Capitol Police: Meet MAGA Granny who refused Trump’s Jan 6 pardon

Insult to Capitol Police: Meet MAGA Granny who refused Trump's Jan 6 pardon

Pamela Hemphill, a 71-year-old withdrew drug and alcohol counsellor from Boise, Idaho, made stories this week for her decision to reject a reprimand from President Donald Trump for her role in the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. Hemphill, who pleaded guilty to a criminal for entering the Capitol, served 60 days in prison and is now on probation.
Her refusal to accept mercy is a strong assertion of her condemnation of Trump and his part in the events of January 6. In an exam, Hemphill expressed that accepting the pardon would be an affront to the Capitol Police and the rule of law. “It’s an affront to the Capitol Police, to the rule of law, and to the state, ” she said. “If I accept a pardon, I’m continuing their misinformation, their gaslighting, and all their untruths about Jan. 6. ”
Recently dubbed “MAGA Granny” by the internet, Hemphill has since distanced herself from Trump and the “Stop the Steal” activity, describing her cooperation as part of a cult-like thinking. A doctor helped her know that her presence was deliberate and that she had lost her ability to think critically.
Despite her wish to accept the reprimand, legal experts have noted that she may not be allowed to do so. A 1927 U. S. Supreme Court ruling established that political mercy does not involve the user’s consent. Judge James R. Sweeney II recently upheld this law in a similar situation, emphasizing that commutations or pardons are decided by public security, no personal preference.
Hemphill’s open position against the forgive has sparked broader conversations about accountability and the constitutional challenges of rejecting mercy. Her trip highlights the lingering personal and societal implications of January 6 and the shifting affiliations of those after greatly aligned with Trump’s activity.
