After surviving a tumultuous battle with Democrats who decried the Trump nomination as incompetent and unfit to manage the nation’s 1.3 million active work soldiers and the Pentagon’s nearly$ 85 billion resources, the US Senate barely confirmed Pete Hegseth as defence secretary on Friday.
After three Republicans joined all Democrats in opposition, Vice President JD Vance had to put a tiebreaking voting to ensure Hegseth. The last vote, 51-50, was the smallest percentage for a security secretary’s verification since the place was created in 1947.
Hegseth, a defense veteran and former Fox News host, has vowed to take his self-described “warrior” attitude to the defence ministry, which he says has been made weak by “woke” commanders and diversification programs. As they greeted his assurance, Republican leaders accepted that view. Senator Roger Wicker remarked,” Peace through durability is back on the horizon under President Trump and Hegseth.”
Democrats, who overwhelmingly opposed Hegseth’s assurance, promised to continue their investigation of him. ” I am going to watch him like a hawk”, senator Jack Reed, said, adding:” I will demand accountability”.
Hegseth’s choice by President Donald Trump and the verification process were hampered by a sexual abuse allegation, allegations of abusive behavior, public intoxication, and mismanagement of two nonprofit soldiers organizations.
