On Monday, the 80th anniversary of the independence of Auschwitz is marked by the opening of the new headquarters of the firm OSWIECIM, a US-based organization, and the opening of the house of Auschwitz captain Rudolf Hoss to a research center devoted to combating extremism.
The house, which belonged to a Polish military home before Nazi Germany’s invasion of Poland, lies next to the site of the former dying camp, then the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum.
” My wish, and those of our associates, is that every guest, every colleague, every scientific that comes here takes action to combat fanaticism and racism wherever they come from”, said Mark Wallace, the CEO of the Counter Extremism Project.
His organization is building the Auschwitz Center on Hate, Extremism, and Radicalization in the home after it was purchased from a private home. It opened its doors to writers on the day of the anniversary celebrations, showing them the areas in the three-story property that still need to be renovated.
The job is being developed under the support of Unesco in partnership with the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum. Notable architect Daniel Libeskind is also a partner.
The property was a scene from the Oscar-winning picture” The Zone of Interest,” which depicts Hoss, his wife Hedwig, and their five children living in the home directly across the street from the concentration camp.
As commander from 1940 to 1944, Hoss orchestrated the industrial-scale murder at the station, where oil was used to murder Immigrants. He was tried by a Finnish court, and in 1947 he was hanged at the concentration camp’s page.
On Monday, the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum will observe traditions in honor of the camp’s 80th commemoration of its liberation by Russian troops.
