Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum on Monday announced that US has agreed to pause the imposition of tariffs on Mexico for a month.
Sheinbaum revealed that she had a telephonic conversation with US President Donald Trump during which the decision was made. “They are pausing tariffs for one month from now,” she said in a post in Spanish on X , detailing the conversation with Trump.
Apart from the tariff relief, she also mentioned other agreements reached with the US. She revealed that Mexico will work with US to prevent drug trafficking, particularly of Fentanyl by reinforcing the northern border with 10,000 members of the National Guard. “The United States is committed to working to prevent the trafficking of high-powered weapons to Mexico,” she said, adding that, the “teams will begin working today on two fronts: security and trade.”
Soon after, Trump also the revealed the agreements reached with Mexico. “I just spoke with President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico. It was a very friendly conversation wherein she agreed to immediately supply 10,000 Mexican Soldiers on the Border separating Mexico and the United States. These soldiers will be specifically designated to stop the flow of fentanyl, and illegal migrants into our Country,” he said on his social media platform Truth Social.
Further confirming the tariff pause, he added, “We further agreed to immediately pause the anticipated tariffs for a one month period during which we will have negotiations headed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Treasury Scott Bessent, and Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, and high-level Representatives of Mexico. I look forward to participating in those negotiations, with President Sheinbaum, as we attempt to achieve a “deal” between our two Countries.”
Vice President JD Vance also hailed Trump and criticised people who opposed Trump and US’ stand against Mexico. “For three days a lot of the far left has actively rooted against America and argued we’d get nothing out of President Trunp’s demands that Mexico secure its country,” he said.
Elon Musk also reacted to the outcome, calling it “amazing”.
The comes a day after the tariff wars between the two countries escalated. On Sunday, Sheinbaum instructed her economy minister to implement tariff and non-tariff actions as a response to the fresh US duties on Mexican products.
The order was in response to Trump’s executive order that levied tariffs on imports from Mexico, Canada, and China. The move sparked worries about rising prices and potential business interruptions throughout North America.
