The country’s authorities are in disagreement over how to respond to the enormous achievement of the Chinese AI software DeepSeek. The technology minister urges caution, while some business groups call for immediate action to assist national AI innovation.

The Tech Council of Australia, an business system that includes Microsoft, Atlassian, Google, and IBM among its users, warned the authorities should “act then or chance Australia falling behind in AI development and adoption”. In a speech about the American government’s federal AI potential program, the TCA said,” DeepSeek’s reported discovery shows that the AI landscape is extremely competitive and rapidly evolving”.

DeepSeek lately launched an AI talk game featuring a “reasoning” model equivalent to OpenAI’s o1. The DeepSeek software fast surged to the bottom of Apple’s App Store, causing a stir among British AI businesses. Its album shook the financial markets; Microsoft and NVIDIA both experienced declines as buyer confidence in American AI companies dropped.

The Council argued that the country” cannot delay” until 2025 for the government’s reported national AI plan, but it also emphasized its support for it. It recommended important interests such as AI education, infrastructure investment, pro-innovation rules, global cooperation, and study aid.

According to research from the business group conducted in November, increasing the country’s GDP by 3.7 % to 4.6 % could result in productivity gains of AUD$ 39 billion by 2035. To ensure Australia is a dynamic market for manufacturing and delivering systems products, the committee stated that “realizing these benefits may need the right plan settings and coordination with industry.”

The American Strategic Policy Institute, a notable think tank, echoed the Council’s attitude. It stated that Australia should concentrate on developing its own royal Artificial capabilities rather than continuing to respond to each new technical development. Like the Tech Council, the university emphasised the need for a national plan to secure AI’s part in military, national security, and financial stability.

DeepSeek has even raised safety concerns. Researchers have found the software is vulnerable to attacks and can be jailbroken, allowing it to pass its built-in protection. CyberCX, a leading Australian security agency, has called for a moratorium on DeepSeek in Australia, citing threats to data protection and regional security.

” We assess it is almost certain that DeepSeek, the models and programs it creates, and the user data it collects, is content to direction and control by the Chinese state”, CyberCX said in a statement.

Since the debut of DeepSeek, national industry and technology secretary Ed Husic has also taken a cautious position. He expressed concern that the phone’s amazing capabilities may have been compromised by poor “data and privacy management” rather than urging rapid innovation to contend with China.

” The Taiwanese are very good at creating materials that function very well. That market is familiar with their information and privacy policies, Husic told ABC via AFP. The question is “whether those items will be embraced in the same way the moment you export it to businesses where customers have different expectations for privacy and data control.”

Newly-appointed Chief Scientist Tony Haymet, but, expressed a more positive perspective. Haymet described DeepSeek’s achievements as a “how disruptive technologies can be and how quickly things can happen” during a press conference.

He said:” I view AI as a great opportunity. Because AI requires energy and the majority of the world demands that we provide it with renewable electricity, Australia is properly prepared for that, I believe it’s a wonderful export opportunity for Australia. No matter which method we decide to give that light, we can do it”.
